WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a major shift to airport security protocol, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ended the long-standing requirement for most passengers to remove their shoes at U.S. airport checkpoints. The change, effective immediately, was announced by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on July 8.

Some U.S. airports now allow passengers to keep shoes on during TSA screenings, diverging from post-2001 security practices. The TSA is considering enhancing passenger experience while maintaining security.
Since at least 2011, officials at DHS have promised a shoes-on future, and the department’s own science arm developed and licensed a “high definition–advanced imaging technology shoe scanner.” In January, the DHS announced that the machine would be deployed by 2026, promising, in a demonstration with the TSA, a footwear scan in seconds.
