Tennessee wide receiver named AP SEC Freshman of the Year
Tennessee wide receiver Braylon Staley was named SEC Freshman of the Year by the Associated Press on Friday. A redshirt freshman for the Vols, he also earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors from the league's coaches.
It was only two years ago the Wolverines won their first national title in more than a quarter century, and much has happened since: one coach (Jim Harbaugh) ran to the NFL before the NCAA sheriff could get him, and another coach (Sherrone Moore) was fired Wednesday after an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate.
The conference is better off with one division, which has led to better matchups even if it means minor headaches.
The SEC broke the record in December for representation in the College Football Playoff, comprising nearly half the field with five teams. Commissioner Greg Sankey believes his conference deserved seven, and while his argument might hold merit among the metrics crowd, one can't argue that the SEC was the best conference in the country in 2025.
