Philip D. Murphy, New Jersey’s former governor, did enact legislation to protect the rights of undocumented residents at schools, courthouses and health care facilities.

Abigail Davis Spanberger was sworn in as Virginia's 75th and first female governor. Spanberger's inauguration was part of a Democratic sweep that included the state's first Black attorney general and first Muslim lieutenant governor. In her speech, the new governor called for unity while also criticizing federal policies from Washington.

Term limited Gov. Bill Lee will leave the Tennessee governor’s office in January 2027, and voters will decide in November 2026 who will succeed him.

Spanberger also signed an executive order that rescinds a directive instructing state law enforcement and corrections officers to help with immigration enforcement.
