Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist known for her hypnotic, repetitive polka dot artworks, died earlier this week at the age of 97.

Ms. Kusama, whose death earlier this month at age 97 was announced Thursday by her museum and foundation, was born in Matsumoto to a well-off but unhappy family.

Kusama, often referred to as the 'High Priestess of Polka Dots', was a renowned Japanese artist known for her distinctive style and significant contributions to the art world.
