BEIJING, Dec ‌29 (Reuters) - ​China's military ‌will conduct ​live fire exercises ‍around Taiwan on ​Tuesday, ​state ⁠news agency Xinhua reported on Monday, with a graphic ‌demarcatating five zones surrounding ​the ‌island that ‍will be ⁠under sea and air space restrictions.

Taiwan was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday (local time) as locals in the capital, Taipei, reported intense tremors. The quake struck near Yilan County, with the Japan Meteorological Agency issuing a tsunami advisory for Miyakojima and the Yaeyama regions.

Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai face impeachment proceedings filed by opposition party leaders after a Friday vote.

This was the strongest earthquake in Taiwan since April 2024, when several buildings collapsed and 20 people were killed.

The sanctions entail freezing the companies’ assets in China and banning individuals and organizations from dealing with them, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice disclosed it holds over 210 bitcoin seized from criminal cases, placing the country among the world’s top government bitcoin holders.
