President Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom met on the tarmac of the Los Angeles International Airport on Friday when the president arrived and committed to working together on wildfire receovery.

Gov. Gavin Newsom told the president that California needed his help, and President Trump said he would work to “get something completed.”

Trump and Newsom greeted one another on the tarmac at LAX on Friday as Trump plans to tour fire damaged areas of the state.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday announced that he would deploy additional resources ahead of the extreme fire weather expected this week.

Trump is set to visit California on Friday, and the state’s governor will need to convince the president and congressional Republicans to provide aid to help rebuild Los Angeles.

California still considers looting a crime. Newsom debunked the claim on X, and prosecutors have charged multiple people with looting.

Although not publicly invited by Trump, Newsom said he will be at the airport with the red carpet to welcome the newly sworn-in president.

President Trump arrived in California to survey the devastation caused by wildfires that tore through parts of Los Angeles. Despite their political differences, Gov. Gavin Newsom thanked Trump for past support and expressed optimism about working together on wildfire recovery efforts.

Cal Fire’s total base wildfire protection budget has nearly tripled over the past 10 years, from $1.1 billion in 2014‑15 to $3 billion in 2023‑24.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has only expanded the size and scope of California government during his tenure, while Trump plans radical federal cuts.
