U.S. President Donald Trump has provoked outrage and distress in the U.K. with his suggestion that troops from NATO countries stayed away from the frontline during the war in Afghanistan

The mother of a Scottish soldier killed in Afghanistan has described Donald Trump's claim that allies stayed away from the front line as "soul-destroying". Sean Binnie was a 22-year-old acting sergeant when he was killed while on patrol with the Black Watch in Helmand Province in May 2009.

Separately, Trump sparked outcry in the United Kingdom after saying in a Fox Business interview that NATO troops "stayed a little off the front lines" in Afghanistan.
