El Salvador’s top human rights organization, Cristosal, says it is leaving the country after harassment and legal threats by the government of President Nayib Bukele.

A prominent human rights group critical of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has suspended operations in the country, citing the government’s harassment, repression and persecution of human rights defenders.

The group, Cristosal, has investigated prison deaths and torture under President Nayib Bukele. Its employees were threatened and surveilled, its director said.
