The highly pathogenic avian flu virus has once again found its mark and caused the fatal deaths of wild birds in New York after a dozen Canadian Geese were found dead in a partially frozen pond at Thornwood’s Carroll Park last week.

Mount Pleasant officials said 12 Canada geese found dead at a pond in a park were taken by the state Department of Environmental Conservation for testing. The birds were found Sunday, Feb. 2, at Carroll Park, on Rollings Hill Road in the Thornwood hamlet. The town has also notified the county Department of Health.

The 12 geese that were found dead at Carroll Park in Thornwood died as a result of bird flu, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation. News 12 first reported Town of Thornwood officials said the birds were found on Feb. 2 and were removed by a wildlife expert for further testing.

As the bird flu continues to spread, more dead geese are popping up. “They are around mostly the river area. There are a few out on the ice with the cold we’ve had. The river is mostly frozen over in most places,
