Hurricane Melissa strengthened into a Category 4 storm as it churned northwest through the Caribbean Sea on Sunday, taking a direct aim at Jamaica, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Melissa, which is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane.
Melissa could be one of the most intense, devastating hurricanes on record in Jamaica, with widespread flooding, landslides and destructive winds. Flooding rain is also a grave concern in Hispaniola.
The National Hurricane Center's 8 p.m. Friday update reported that Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 190 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 225 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. Packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, it is tracking north at 2 mph.
