Penn State isn't in a hurry to name its next football coach. That being said, a favorite for the job has emerged. After suffering losses to Oregon, UCLA and Northwestern from Sept. 27 to Oct. 11, Penn State made the tough decision to fire James Franklin.

Despite there being more than a month before the College Football Playoff field is announced, it feels like a formality Ohio State is going to be part of the 12-team field. The Buckeyes currently sit atop the college football rankings and have controlled each of the seven games they have played this year.

Penn State has some company in a miserable category this week, as the Nittany Lions are no longer the only former top-10 team ranked in the Bottom 25. Florida State is in the same boat after a 20-13 loss at Stanford marked its fourth straight defeat.

Everyone who works in and around college football expects a great deal of coaching turnover this offseason. A crazy coaching carousel appears all but assured after a flurry of midseason firings, as some of the bluest of blueblood programs are already looking for their next head coaches.
