Mount Aso, located in Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's Kyushu island, is one of the world's largest active volcanoes and Japan's most significant after Mount Fuji. The massive caldera formed through four catastrophic eruptions between 300,000 and 90,000 years ago, with the final Aso-4 eruption being so powerful that its volcanic ash blanketed all of Kyushu and reached as far as Yamaguchi Prefecture.
