This adult common loon came to us Tuesday after being found in a road. It had minor abrasions to its feet which healed up quickly. We checked its blood for lead which was not an issue. Loons and other diving birds often mistake wet blacktop for a body of water and try to land on it. Many of these birds are then unable to take off without being in water. On Monday this Common Loon was found grounded near Chemult. Once we arrived and checked the little guy over, it was apparent the bird had just mistaken wet pavement for water and crash landed. Being a diving bird (like diving ducks and grebes) loons have legs placed very far back on their bodies. They are designed for diving, not walking on land. These birds must have water to take off again. So patient 2025-200 just needed a lift to the nearest lake where it took to the water like a loon! #wild
