This amazing historic footage from 1916 shows our volunteer crews performing a practice lifeboat launch on Formby beach. Horses tow the boat onto the waves - the boathouse was 100 yards inland. Formby lifeboat station was closed a few years after this film was taken - it's claimed that it was the world's first purpose-built lifeboat station, having been established in the 1770s.
