The imposing East Tower of Helmsley Castle. Helmsley castle in North Yorkshire is one of the most beautiful medieval castles in England and dates to the 12th century. Besieged by Thomas Fairfax in 1664, the Royalist garrison managed to hold on to the castle for an impressive 3 months before they ran out food and water.
