"Early spring in mid-winter" was evident today, as brighter skies and warmer temperatures carried us into the upper 50s around the Sound. Sea-Tac maxed out at 58 degrees, tying the record there for the 13th of January (previously attained in 2018). Many locations in Western Washington hovered close to 60, including the passes at 3,000 to 4,000'! A growing ridge of high pressure over the western United States is responsible for the weird warm-up. In fact, Seattle wasn't alone: Denver hit the low

Strong onshore is pumping the cool, moist ocean air in from the Pacific, keeping temps below average and stubborn overcast skies trapped in the Puget Sound basin. Highs struggled to make it out of the 50s on Tuesday, barely cracking 60 degrees at Sea-Tac Airport late in the day. The pattern doesn't change much on Wednesday, and as such, the weather won't either! We'll keep things mainly cloudy with a few sprinkles, and highs will hover on either side of 60 for the metro area again tomorrow. We'l

Heavy rain, but plenty of shine...it must be April in the Pacific Northwest! The "kitchen sink" Tuesday featured peeks of blue sky and long rounds of gray, which often dropped heavy rain and hail on commuters. Highs again ran a bit chilly, with temperatures topping out just barely above 50 near the metro area. Southwesterly gusts of 35 to 50 mph howled through the region at times, especially near the coast and north of Mukilteo. A dry break ensues on Wednesday, and lasts a whopping 24 to 30 hour

Winter weather has finally walloped the Cascades, with snow totals of one to two feet over the higher peaks in just the last two days. Tonight, the WINTER STORM WARNING continues there, which will account for an additional 8 to 18" of snow through Thursday. This is wonderful news for the ski parks, with most of the terrain now up and running for the season. We'd love to keep this seasonable snow level going...but another warm surge now appears determined to take over for a spell early next week.

Two weeks into the month of December, and in some western Cascade foothill locations, we've tallied up over two feet of rain in that timeframe! It's no wonder the flooding has been so severe. We haven't had a break from the relentless warm rain courtesy of the Pineapple Express, the type of atmospheric river that reaches deep into the subtropics and transports loads of warm water vapor into our region. Unfortunately, we'll battle one more round of the Hawaiian-rooted moisture before things get b

What a fantastic Friday! The mainly sunny skies and northwesterly winds carried us into "just right" territory today, and highs climbed into the upper 60s to low 70s around the Puget Sound Basin. It was certainly a nice way to kick off the weekend! However, changes are on deck for the rest of it. Speaking of decks, if you have al fresco meal plans with mom this weekend, you'll want to watch the skies pretty closely, as showers are going to work their way into the picture little by little. Another night, another storm! Spring tried to take the baton today, but winter wrestled it back just in time for the evening commute. As promised, we battled heavy rain, gusty winds, pockets of hail and rumbles of thunder and lightning just when everyone was hitting the highway to head back home. Up in the mountains, this heavy precipitation is translating into more heavy mountain snow, and the WINTER STORM WARNING/WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES will continue for the Cascades through Saturday morning

The finale of April was sure a looker: blue skies made for a brighter and warmer day, and highs headed up into the low 60s around the Sound, which was near normal for this time of year. However, May Day will be even warmer, with a ridge of high pressure building quickly along the west coast on Thursday. This will keep us clear and will coax in a mild, dry northeasterly breeze, which will push temperatures up into the low to middle 70s around the metro area. Some communities near the foothills or

Northern Lights vs. increasing clouds...it will be a race between the two tonight! A severe geomagnetic storm (G4) has been detected, meaning the aurora borealis will be flaring up around the globe tonight. We've already had beautiful photos of waving colors sent in from parts of North America, including the Ferndale, Edmonds and the Yakima Valley, so they are already nicely visible! Weatherwise, clouds are already starting to pull in from the coast to the Cascades in Western Washington...unfort

A long fetch of subtropically-rooted moisture will bring steady, warm rain to the PNW this weekend. Atmospheric rivers put pressure on our waterways & can lead to flooding. The US National Weather Service Seattle Washington has already posted a FLOOD WARNING for moderate flooding expected on the Skokomish. #WAwx | Shannon O'Donnell KOMO

After days on end of oddly dry and quiet weather, at least things changed up a *touch* on Thursday: a weak disturbance ambled over the top of us, increasing the cloud cover and dropping a few showers from Cape Flattery to Cosmopolis. The drops (and a few stray flurries) were fleeting, few, and far between, but we'll take what we can get! The Olympics and south Cascades will pick up a skiff of fresh snow over the next few hours. It won't be enough to make boost our lean snow pack, but hopefully i

We're heading into early March, and we're running plenty behind on rain and snow this season. Sea-Tac is over 4.5" below the normal since the first of January, and the north and Central Cascades are only checking in with 60 to 70% of the average snowpack. Thankfully, Tuesday's disturbance remedied that a bit, with a solid mid-day soaking from the coast to the eastside foothills. By the evening commute, leftover showers were ping-ponging back and forth with sunbreaks, and highs settled in near 50

As promised, Thursday was kind of a weird one, weatherwise! We started with a surge of warmth in FRONT of the front, as mild southerly winds gave us a boost well into the middle to upper 60s around the Sound by mid-day. The approaching storm upped the humidity, so by Northwest standards, it felt a touch muggy throughout Western Washington before the rain arrived. But arrive it did, and in gusty, blustery fashion, it made for a soggy afternoon commute. The rain was heavy at times, and quickly coo

We are mid-way through October, and it's often the marker between the last of the sunny warmth and the REAL autumn weather around the corner. It looks like our October of 2025 will go according to plan! Most of the work and school week has been lovely so far. After a stormy autumn weekend that brought rain, hail, lightning, wind plus our first significant coating of mountain snow, skies cleared nicely by Monday afternoon, and it's been bright and blue ever since. We've experienced some of the co

Sweater weather, here we go! It was a quick fall into autumn Monday, as the first soggy storm of the new season rolled in right on schedule. The commutes were showery, the air was crispy, and the pumpkin spice latte orders were flying out of the coffee shops! Highs made it only into the 60s Monday afternoon, which is typical for this time of year--but it sure felt cool after that warm and sunny final weekend of September. The month will go out with an even bigger storm on deck, as a deep low and

Our misty May morning eventually made for a mostly cloudy Wednesday, but even as the sprinkles wound down and the sunbreaks popped out, we struggled to warm up. Highs only maxed out in the upper 50s to low 60s around the Sound, which is still on the cool side of normal. The damp weather is welcome, because we are quite behind in terms of our annual rainfall. For climate record purposes, the "rain year" begins on October 1st, and Sea-Tac is over 7 inches behind our normal year-to-date precipitati

Our Stella Sun KOMO with the forecast discussion tonight! *** For the first time since 1999, the National Weather Service Seattle Office issued a severe thunderstorm watch through King county Wednesday afternoon and evening. A thunderstorm is considered "severe" when the cell is capable of producing wind gusts over 58mph, hail 1" or greater, and a chance for tornado development. While there were no severe thunderstorms reported in the Seattle metro area, over by the Olympics, a cell produced hai

March is here--late winter weather. But where is the late winter rain? We are running quite behind the curve for our usual precipitation. Since the first of January, Sea-Tac Airport is over four and a half inches behind normal, as we've only picked up 5.41" of rain so far in 2025. The snowpack is looking lean too, with the Central Cascades region at only 62% of the usual amounts between Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes for this time of year. Time to remedy that! We'll make up a bit for the deficits

Another fall night, another fall storm, but it will be a pretty routine round of rain and wind for late October. A quick-moving frontal system will barrel by overnight, giving us a short round of steady rain and blustery wind. Compared to our stormy weekend, this disturbance will be unremarkable, but we'll still contend with wet commuting and whistling southerly winds. Gusts of 25 to 45 mph will blow through the ocean beaches and the Northwest Interior, including from Mukilteo north toward the B

Here comes the SUN again: the atmospheric pendulum is swinging wildly this week--the only consistency being the inconsistence! We hit our first 80s of the year in Seattle on Wednesday, only to see a feisty May cold front bring in rain, wind and cool temperatures in the 50s and 60s on Thursday. For Friday, we'll be right back to bright and blue with highs in the 70s to low 80s as high pressure grows over the region yet again. And yet again...that won't last long either. We are a week into February, and what a week it's been! We've seen cold air and areas of snow since the month began, and we'll hold onto both as we head into the weekend. Another weak disturbance is curling into Western Washington tonight, and as the moisture hits that cold air, we'll pull down more scattered snow showers over the next 24 hours. Once again, accumulations will vary greatly, with the vast majority of us seeing a trace or less of fresh snowfall. However, a few of us could pile up 1

Back to work and back to...sunshine! After a soggy and cool Saturday followed by a mild and partly sunny Sunday, the best weather for getting outdoors is currently showing itself just in time for most of us to get back indoors to the office. A mini-ridge of high pressure coupled with mild northwesterly winds are working to push highs into the 70s to low 80s for the next pair of afternoons. Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week, with afternoon readings near 80--what a nice day for an iced c

The weather has timed out so perfectly over the last week: a rainy afternoon locally to enjoy rooting on our Seahawks at the Super Bowl. A clear, mild February morning for cheering on their victory parade through the city streets. A dark and stormy night for Friday the 13th. Rain, rain, here to stay! After a dry and chilly first few weeks of February, we are rounding the corner toward the finish line decidedly more damp. An atmospheric river is steering in our direction this weekend, and it will pump up the precipitation along with the temperatures and snow levels. As promised, Friday ended on a soggy note, with an extra rainy evening commute. Highs hovered near 50, which is still near normal for this time of year. However, a plume of intense moisture extending back

We're more than halfway through our long holiday weekend, and right on schedule, the clouds are rolling in for our Sunday evening. After two days of warmth and sunshine kicking off our "unofficial start of summer," a disturbance is pushing in that will bring in some overnight rain for Memorial Day morning. This weak late May front will spread rain from the coast tonight to the I-5 corridor by dawn. However, the rain won't be terribly heavy, nor will it last very long, as the sun should start pok

Stormy skies are making their way back to the region later this week, with rain, wind, waves and mountain snow all on the menu. In the short-term, we'll enjoy dry and mild October weather for one more day before the storm takes hold. Our wimpy Wednesday disturbance is currently winding down. We pulled a few stray showers from it, mainly near the B.C. border and Olympic Peninsula. Otherwise, the skies turned a bit ominous mid-day on Wednesday near Seattle, but the dark clouds didn't drop much rai

"Rainy days and Mondays" will give way to "stormy days and Tuesdays," as more unsettled shower action traipses through the region over the next 24 hours. Some of the showers could prove locally heavy, with thunder, lightning and small hail again in the mix in the Northwest on Tuesday afternoon. Highs will once again struggle to get too far past 50 degrees, which is chilly for early April. This is keeping the snow level near only 4,000', and we have WINTER STORM WARNINGS in place through Tuesday
