A rare find at our Highgate Common Nature Reserve by ranger Gary Pascoe recently. This is a red -tailed mason bee, more commonly found on chalk grasslands to the south and east of England. We've only had a few sightings in Staffordshire before, and they were quite long ago so they are possibly expanding their range to the north west. Interesting fact - the females lays eggs in old snail shells, before plugging up the hole with chewed up soil and leaf. You can learn more about these bees here. ⬇️
